I spoke to Riza-san about this earlier, but I have a strong suspicion about the nature of this place.  The evidence suggests that this island is a virtual construct, simulated with sensory data delivered to our brains.

The Clues:
- The sudden teleportation of the crossing boat.
- Sudden disappearances and appearances of people from myriad realities.
- Transformation from human to giant, ignoring conservation of mass.
- "Lost days" in which none were conscious without exception.

- We could be in fact perfectly mundane people, implanted with personality and ability templates of our personae here in Manhattan.  Our identities could be manufactured as part of a social experiment to determine the dynamics of human society in response to supernatural stresses.
- A possible alternate reason for the above would be that this Manhattan is a shell program that simplifies the interface of some sort of antivirus action, wherein the crabs and giant represent corrupt or malicious code and our duty is to restore the system's proper function.
- We could have been captured by a cross-dimensional authority of some kind, who have created this virtual world to keep us docile while in transit.  People who disappear in this scenario might be transferred to an alternate facility or holding cell.

I don't know what other possibilities there are.  If anyone has a better suggestion, please tell me.

You know, I'm honestly not sure what to think anymore. For now, I think all we can build are some theories and see where we can go from there. I don't know how we're going to be able to prove them...

I'm not sure if this is a virtual construct, though. I mean, I've seen our captors before. They gave chase before they just vanished.

We never caught up to them. I don't even know if they're human.

Vanishing is impossible without powerful magic or advanced science, far beyond what this world would be capable of, unless our clocks have been modified to mislead us.

Actually, if this is some future world with sufficiently advanced technology, that might explain some of this. I'd honestly much prefer that to the concept of a virtual world.

I don't like what that first one implies...

Neither do I. It's still a possibility, though...much to my concern.

I mean... I've found comic books that are appearently about me. And there are people here who are characters from an old TV show I watched. What if the people who brought us here based us on fictional characters?

That's... I don't like thinking about that.

I...don't know what to think about it myself.

But why would they leave that stuff here for us to find?

That is a very good question.

You mean the supplies and such? That is puzzling.

Don't know what a "virtual world" truly is, but it could simply be a cage holding us within a designated perimiter. It's not impossible.

Not exactly liking your possibility that we're fakes though.

A cage that moves people from one end to the other instantaneously? If this is truly 2009, the technology required is far out of reach...and magic of that caliber would be almost impossible to ignore.

The only condition that would make it possible would be if we're being misled about the time period...but this city would have fallen into disrepair far before. Either way, it's more probable that we are being made to believe something they want us to believe.

Strange to say, but I think that I'd prefer it if

I'm with you. I don't want to lose

...I'm actually ambivalent about the possibility of my history being false.

I've seen stranger things at home, I don't see how this can be impossible. How much do we even know about our captors anyway?

If these are just fake memories then, they sure know how to pick them.

If this city is Manhattan, 2009 AD, it belongs to a mundane world, sealed from magic and demons and whatever else. Science holds sway. Either the natives here are profoundly mistaken about their era, or we were all being misled from the time of the first attack to now.

Considering that they have giant monsters and these crabs in this world, I'm starting to doubt just how "mundane" this place was to begin with. It wouldn't the first, or the last time people in superior position have hidden things from the public.

Outside this place being a giant fake, I can see everyone being mislead about their world.

Being mislead about the time could be a possibility, but why go that far?

Exactly my point. While it's certainly not beyond a government to try and systematically hide the truth from the public, to do it so thoroughly with such hard-to-hide matters leads to the obvious question: how did they do it?

All these things would be so much easier...if this city and the monsters in it are technological illusions.

Those are certainly some interesting theories.

Interesting, and troubling. Do you have any theories to bring forth as well?

I had been considering the possibility that this city may be an alternate reality for the original inhabitants of this city that we had perhaps accidentally been pulled into.

Also possible. There are disturbingly too many answers for this one question, aren't there?

From: [identity profile]
Far too many. I can only wonder which ones are closest to the truth and whether or not the answer will be...easy to accept.

The truth of these matters rarely are.
